The Kingdom of Bahrain has participated in a high-level open debate of the United Nations Security Council on ‘Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the Charter of the United Nations and Maintaining International Peace and Security.’

The meeting was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and chaired by Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, representing China’s rotating Council presidency.

Bahrain’s delegation was led by Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs, who reaffirmed the Kingdom’s commitment to the principles of the UN Charter, including respect for sovereignty, non-interference, peaceful dispute settlement, and rejection of the use of force.

The session was attended by António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, along with heads of state and foreign ministers from several member countries.

Commitment to multilateral cooperation

Al Zayani stressed that the international system is facing unprecedented geopolitical, humanitarian, climate, and technological challenges, underscoring the need to strengthen multilateral cooperation.

The Minister reiterated Bahrain’s call for strengthening confidence in the multilateral system through adherence to the UN Charter and effective collective action in addressing global crises.

Al Zayani further expressed support for diplomatic initiatives aimed at achieving broader regional stability, including efforts involving the United States and regional partners to advance peace negotiations.

Security and Maritime stability

The minister warned of the humanitarian and economic impact of ongoing conflicts, citing rising food insecurity and global displacement levels. He also highlighted concerns over regional maritime security, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation in critical waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz, in accordance with international law.

Bahrain reiterated its position, calling for adherence to international obligations and cooperation to ensure regional stability, while stressing the importance of addressing activities that undermine security and economic stability in the region.

Global cooperation and UN Reform Agenda

Al Zayani emphasized Bahrain’s support for stronger international cooperation in addressing emerging challenges, including digital transformation, artificial intelligence governance, and countering extremism online.

Reaffirming Bahrain’s diplomatic role as a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council, the Arab League, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, he underscored the Kingdom’s commitment to advancing multilateral diplomacy.

Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani concluded by calling for comprehensive reform of the United Nations system, including the Security Council, to better reflect current global realities and strengthen its effectiveness in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the Pact for the Future.
