Emirates has conducted its first travel rehearsal program in the Maldives, providing children with autism and their families with a guided airport experience designed to help them prepare for future air travel.

The initiative was organized in partnership with Maldives Airport Company (MACL) and the Inclusive Support Unit of Aminiya School at Velana International Airport (MLE).

It is intended to familiarize travelers with accessibility needs with the airport journey before their scheduled flights.

During the program, participants were guided through each stage of the travel process, including check-in, security screening, departure procedures, immigration, baggage collection, and arrival services.

Supported by Emirates and airport personnel, families were able to experience the airport environment in a structured setting while receiving guidance and asking questions throughout the process. The program aims to help reduce travel-related anxiety by allowing participants to become familiar with airport procedures before traveling.

Supporting accessible air travel

The Travel Rehearsal program forms part of Emirates’ broader efforts to make air travel more accessible for neurodiverse passengers and travelers with additional support needs.

The airline said that the initiative enables participants to experience the complete airport journey in a supportive and controlled environment, helping them build familiarity and confidence before their actual trip.

“We are proud to bring the Travel Rehearsal initiative to the Maldives, helping to alleviate travel anxiety for people with neurodivergence. We have been conducting this program across our network to alleviate travel anxiety faced by people with accessibility requirements by providing a safe and supportive simulation of the journey. We appreciate the support and commitment of MACL and the participation of the Aminiya School to make this rehearsal a success. I would also like to recognize the Emirates Airport Services management and team in the Maldives, who have done outstanding work in pioneering this initiative.”

The program follows Emirates’ recognition as the world’s first autism-certified airline and is being introduced across selected destinations within the airline’s global network.
