Qatar Ministry of Municipality (MoM), represented by the Agriculture Affairs Department and the Food Security Department, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST).
The partnership aims to drive the nation’s food security goals by cooperating in the fields of training, capacity building and scientific research. The MoU was signed by Yousef Khaled Al Khulaifi, the Director of the Department of Agricultural Affairs at the Ministry, and Najla Al Naimi, the Director of the Partnerships and Engagement Directorate at UDST.
The signing ceremony was held in the presence of HE Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Attiyah , Qatar Minister of Municipality and Dr. Salem bin Nasser Al Nuaimi, the President of UDST.
This strategic move falls in line with Qatar’s ongoing efforts to drive the National Food Security Strategy 2030 and implement the Ministry of Municipality Strategy 2024 – 2030, particularly in enhancing food security and self-sufficiency.
Al Khulaifi stated that the MoU aims to cultivate national competencies and research in agriculture and food security, supporting National Food Security Strategy 2030 and sustainable development goals.
Al Naimi highlighted that the agreement fosters fruitful cooperation through the exchange of expertise and knowledge, applied research, technology and capacity-building to address future challenges.
The MoU covers developing specialized training programs to cultivate national talent in agriculture, livestock and fisheries, supporting the implementation of applied research and scientific studies aimed at enhancing the efficiency of local agricultural production, and exchanging knowledge and expertise in sustainable agricultural policy and strategy development.
The agreement also includes training university students through field placements to develop a new generation of specialists capable of enhancing Qatar’s food security system, as well as leveraging research facilities of both parties to develop joint projects in line with national priorities.
Dr. Salem bin Nasser Al Nuaimi stated that this MoU crowns years of ongoing cooperation with the Ministry of Municipality. The president also emphasized the University’s commitment to empowering students on food security through applied programs to encourage innovation and the use of scientific research to develop sustainable solutions.
Furthermore, Al Nuaimi stressed the University’s contributions to national food security through innovations such as smart irrigation systems, greenhouse farming, food waste composting and soil enhancement adapted to Qatar’s climate.
This collaboration highlights both parties’ commitment to driving the Qatar National Vision 2030 by fostering innovation, building a diversified and sustainable economy and achieving food security through knowledge, research and qualified human resources.
