Qatar’s state-owned petroleum company, Qatar Petroleum (QP) has received the “New Venturer of the Year Award” as part of the Wood Mackenzie Exploration Awards 2020, in recognition of its outstanding and growing international exploration presence around the globe.
Qatar Petroleum is the first National Oil Company to accomplish such an honor following a competition with energy icons like BP, ExxonMobil, PTT Exploration & Production, ENI, Total and Petronas.
In announcing the award, Wood Mackenzie said, “Qatar Petroleum embodies the future in terms of high-impact exploration from National Oil Companies. It is building an impressive acreage footprint in many of the world’s most exciting basins, partnering with some of the best operators in these plays, the majors. This strategy has already brought success in South Africa, in Cyprus, and in Guyana.”

The award is based on an annual exploration survey conducted among 250 senior industry leaders and experts, and comprehensive analysis of licensing and farm-in deals over the year.
The prestigious honor empathizes QP’s world-class growing exploration portfolio, which it continues to develop; and presents an important testament to QP’s growing international footprint and enhanced position on the global energy map, in line with its established upstream strategy.
Qatar Petroleum is the third winner of this esteemed honor after Total and ExxonMobil won it in 2019 and 2018 respectively.
Wood Mackenzie also awarded;
“The 2019 Discovery of the Year” to exploration in Maka Central, Suriname by Apache and partner Total.
