Saudi Arabia’s General Presidency of the Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice has launched a location-based notification service through the Mabroor app to deliver Hajj awareness messages to pilgrims in Makkah and Madinah.

The service uses ‘location notifications‘ technology to send guidance and awareness content directly to pilgrims’ smartphones based on their presence within targeted areas in the two holy cities, helping improve access to information related to Hajj, Umrah and religious visits.

The initiative is part of the commission’s broader efforts to enhance digital services for visitors to the Two Holy Mosques and improve the delivery of awareness programs through modern technology platforms.

According to the commission, the location-based service is designed to provide awareness content with greater efficiency and reach by using location-enabled notifications tailored to pilgrims in specific sites across Makkah and Madinah during the Hajj season.

The authority said the move aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen the digital services ecosystem and support the Kingdom’s wider strategy of integrating advanced information technology solutions into services provided for pilgrims and visitors.

The commission added that the initiative complements its existing digital programs aimed at serving visitors to the Two Holy Mosques in line with high standards of quality and operational excellence.

Hajj connectivity hits record levels

Separately, the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) said total voice calls in Makkah and the holy sites on the eighth day of Dhu Al-Hijjah reached 21.3 million, including 18.6 million local calls and 2.7 million international calls. CST said mobile internet speed reached 404 Mbit/s, while average daily data consumption per capita stood at 1,326 MB, more than double the global average.

The ICT sector continues to support rising demand during the Hajj season through technical infrastructure and operational teams aimed at ensuring high-speed connectivity and seamless local and international communication services for pilgrims.

The commission added that the awareness notification initiative complements its existing digital programs aimed at serving visitors to the Two Holy Mosques in line with high standards of quality and operational excellence.
