WhatsApp, the popular messenger app, is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow users to see their contacts’ status updates through their profile pictures.

WhatsApp currently has a separate tab to check status updates.

The company is now focused on improving status updates after introducing modifications to various existing features such as bringing speed playback for voice messages, the multi-device login tool, and new archive options.

The option to view a user’s status is set to be expanded to the chats section now, where users will be able to tap on the profile picture and view the contact’s status. Even if users are on the most recent WhatsApp beta, this feature is still in development and cannot be seen.

The new update was discovered in the code of WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.21.17.5, according to reports. When a user taps a contact’s profile picture, WhatsApp displays an option box asking if the user wants to view the status update or the profile picture. Users can view the status of a specific user by selecting the status update option. This is quite similar to what Twitter did with its Twitter Fleets.

Recently, WhatsApp has made a significant announcement for smartphone users that users would be able to move data from Android to iOS and vice versa. Starting with the new foldable smartphones from Samsung, users will only be able to use the feature to transfer their chat history from iPhones to Samsung’s phones currently. However, the company has stated that the feature will soon be available for both iOS and Android users, allowing data to be transferred in both directions.
