The Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), an affiliate of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, has introduced the first dedicated license plates for trial and commercial autonomous vehicles in Abu Dhabi under the supervision of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council.

The initiative aims to regulate autonomous vehicle operations on Abu Dhabi roads by introducing specialized license plates that identify vehicles involved in testing and pilot programs, as well as those providing commercial services using autonomous driving technologies.

Dedicated plates for commercial and trial operations

The new license plates are divided into two categories. Vehicles operating commercial autonomous services will display the phrase ‘Auto Drive,’ while vehicles involved in testing and pilot programs will carry the word ‘Test.’ Both categories feature a unified blue design to enable easy identification of autonomous vehicles on roads.

The dedicated plates will support authorities in monitoring autonomous vehicles operating across the emirate and improve the management of field operations.

They are also linked to the licensing and operational requirements established for autonomous vehicles, ensuring that companies comply with approved technical and operational standards.

Advancing smart mobility development

The introduction of the plates comes as Abu Dhabi continues to expand autonomous vehicle operations through commercial services and testing programs conducted by specialized companies.

The initiative will also support the development of the autonomous vehicle ecosystem by enabling authorities to collect and analyze operational data, which can contribute to future policies, regulations, and sector planning.

Abu Dhabi Mobility stated that the move forms part of the emirate’s efforts to develop a regulatory framework that supports the testing and deployment of smart mobility solutions while maintaining safety and operational efficiency. The initiative is expected to strengthen Abu Dhabi’s readiness for the wider adoption of autonomous transport technologies.
