Bahrain has opened the first phase of the North Isa Town Interchange Project with the inauguration of a new flyover on Shaikh Salman Highway, advancing efforts to upgrade the Kingdom’s transport infrastructure and improve traffic mobility.
The flyover was inaugurated by Ebrahim bin Hasan Al Hawaj, Bahrain’s Minister of Works. The development is being implemented under the supervision of the Ministerial Committee for Development and Infrastructure Projects, chaired by Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, Deputy Prime Minister.
The first phase comprises a three-lane flyover in each direction along Shaikh Salman Highway. According to the Ministry of Works, the new structure is expected to reduce congestion, improve traffic movement, and support the implementation of the remaining stages of the interchange.
Ebrahim bin Hasan Al Hawaj said that the North Isa Town Interchange Project will strengthen road links between Riffa, A’ali, Sanad, Salmabad, and Isa Town, while improving the overall performance of Bahrain’s road network.
Once fully completed, the interchange is expected to handle more than 22,000 vehicles per hour, increasing capacity and improving traffic flow along Shaikh Salman Highway, a key route connecting the Capital, Northern, and Southern governorates.
The development also includes the reconstruction of the junction linking Shaikh Salman Highway with Amman Avenue and Salmabad Avenue through the construction of a three-lane flyover in both directions, allowing uninterrupted movement on the highway.

The existing ground-level intersection is being upgraded with traffic signals to improve vehicle movement on Amman Avenue and Salmabad Avenue.
Additional works include the construction of a stormwater drainage network, road surfacing, pavement upgrades, landscaping, and the installation of road safety facilities.
Al Hawaj added that the ministry is carrying out the project in line with approved quality and safety standards while implementing traffic management measures to minimize disruption to motorists during construction in coordination with the relevant authorities.
The minister also thanked citizens, residents, and road users for their cooperation during traffic diversions and urged motorists to continue following traffic instructions throughout the remaining phases of the project.
