Tawakkalna, the official Saudi Contact Tracing app approved by the Ministry of Health to prevent the spread of COVID-19, has surpassed 23 million users according to the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA).

The app, which has more than 25 strategic partners, offers more than 100 services and is available in over 75 countries around the world.

The application is also used to check or provide verification of a person’s vaccination status, as well as to show current infection status or infection history.

The application had begun its first phase following an order from King Salman, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, to protect citizens and residents of the Kingdom from the risks of COVID-19 spread during the curfew imposed upon the pandemic’s outbreak.

The first phase’s goal was to facilitate the managing process of electronically issuing movement permits during the curfew period, continuing the work of government and private agencies, and easily identifying health cases by setting a color to each type of case to help in the visual sorting process. During that time, the number of requests for mobility permits exceeded 27 million.

The focus of the application’s second phase, which began after the curfew, was “Containing the pandemic and returning to normal life safely” to support digital transformation in Saudi Arabia, and to facilitate citizens and residents to contain the pandemic and to return with caution to ensure the safety of society.

The services in the second phase focused on booking coronavirus testing appointments, booking slots for vaccines, gathering management services to ensure community safety, services to ensure the safe proceeding of the educational process, in addition to health passport services, Hajj and Umrah services, digital wallet services, and dashboard services.

There were more than 30 million coronavirus examinations and vaccine reservations in the second phase of the application, as well as more than 20 million holy site permits. Apart from more than 19 million health passports and more than 60 million documents in the wallet, the number of permits to enter gatherings exceeded 60 million.

The third phase, themed “Towards a promising technological advancement,” featured a variety of services to facilitate easier lives for citizens, residents, and tourists, during which the application saw a global expansion, and life returned to normal. Building strategic alliances, providing value-added services, and expanding the app around the world were all part of the third phase.
