The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has launched the Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Interchange (AIII), a new initiative aimed at fostering expert dialogue on the intersection of intellectual property (IP) and artificial intelligence (AI).

Over 1,700 participants, including government Ministers, industry leaders in the field of AI and IP as well as other stakeholders, have registered to join the AIII launch event held at WIPO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The AIII platform will focus on addressing technical and operational issues related to AI, complementing ongoing discussions taking place in other WIPO forums.

Conversations within AIII will bring together a diverse range of participants, including creators, rights-holders, developers, technical experts, and other stakeholders, to engage in in-depth discussions on a variety of critical topics.

These discussions will cover issues such as facilitating large-scale access to data, establishing robust identification and attribution standards, implementing watermarking and fingerprinting techniques, improving rights management, and exploring the use of AI tools to support IP enforcement and infrastructure development.

To ensure these highly detailed, technical-level discussions can take place effectively, a Technical Exchange Network has been assembled, comprising over 90 experts from dozens of countries.

The AIII network includes representatives from leading technology firms, AI developers, rights-holders, individual creators, academic institutions, and civil society, creating a broad and inclusive platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration.

“AI has the power to change the nature of innovation and creativity. This poses challenges for the global IP ecosystem, but also gives us an opening to identify and seize new opportunities. History shows that new technologies only reach their full potential when the systems around them evolve too. Railways transformed economies once networks became interoperable. Music streaming scaled once the industry built the metadata and rights infrastructure needed for content to move efficiently through the digital ecosystem. AI is now at a similar moment. By building strong and healthy infrastructure networks, we can help AI achieve its potential of creating new opportunities while supporting, enabling and empowering human innovators and creators.”

This global expert network will begin with a pioneering mapping of existing copyright infrastructure and the technical challenges and opportunities at the intersection of AI and the creative economy. The findings will help pinpoint targeted areas for future work.
