xAI, Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence (AI) startup, has open-sourced its Grok 2.5 model, making it available for researchers and developers to study and build upon.

The move follows last year’s release of Grok 1 as part of Musk’s stated commitment to open-source AI development.

Grok 2.5, an AI-powered chatbot similar to ChatGPT, can answer questions, generate text, and analyze data. The model is integrated primarily into the X platform application.

Musk also said that Grok 3 will be released as open-source in about six months, with Grok 5 expected by the end of the year.

The Grok models are designed to compete with major AI frameworks, with xAI positioning itself as a challenger in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence ecosystem. Open-sourcing these models provides transparency and fosters collaboration within the global AI community.

In previous remarks, Musk has underlined the importance of open-source AI development for moral innovation and lowering monopolistic power in the AI industry.

In July Morgan Stanley announced that they had raised $5 billion in debt for xAI and that xAI had separately raised $5 billion in equity. The debt consists of secured notes and term loans. Morgan Stanley took no stake in the debt. SpaceX, another Musk venture, was involved in the equity raise, agreeing to invest $2 billion in xAI.

Also, Grok for Government and the United States Department of Defense announced that xAI had received a $200 million contract for AI in the military, along with Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI.
