A strategic contract has been awarded for the construction of a new fish landing centre in the village of Bimmah in the Wilayat of Qurayat, Governorate of Muscat, as part of efforts to strengthen fisheries infrastructure and support the development of Oman’s fishing sector.

The fish landing center project is among a series of food security initiatives being implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources to enhance the sustainability and productivity of the fisheries industry while improving services provided to fishermen.

The fish landing center project represents a strategic investment in fisheries infrastructure and is designed to provide safer and more efficient facilities for fishing activities in the coastal community of Bimmah.

Project Manager Eng. Khulood bint Khalfan Al Sarmi said that the fish landing center project has an estimated cost of $6.23 million (RO 2.4 million). She explained that the development includes the construction of a 434-metre main breakwater aimed at protecting fishing boats from sea waves and improving safety within the harbor area. The project also includes a 183-metre secondary breakwater that will further enhance protection and operational efficiency for vessels using the facility.

In addition, the project comprises a 10,500-square-metre investment area designated for fisheries-related commercial and economic activities, creating opportunities to support businesses linked to the fishing industry and generate added value for the local economy.

Eng. Khulood said that the fish landing center project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027. She added that the fish landing center will contribute to improving the working environment for fishermen by providing modern infrastructure and facilities that facilitate daily fishing operations.

The project is also expected to increase the efficiency of fish landing activities, improve handling processes and support the overall development of the fisheries sector. The initiative is expected to enhance economic activity in the local community by supporting fisheries-related investments and creating opportunities for growth in associated industries, in line with the ministry’s objectives to strengthen food security and promote sustainable development within Oman’s coastal regions.
