The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has opened a new three-lane bridge as part of the Oud Metha and Al Asayel Streets Development Project, with the overall project reaching 90 percent completion.
The bridge has a capacity of 3,600 vehicles per hour and serves traffic traveling from Al Khail Road to Al Asayel Street via Al Wasl Club Street.
RTA announced that the remaining works are scheduled for completion in phases. By the end of August, the authority plans to open two tunnels and another bridge under the project.
One tunnel will connect the service road on Oud Metha Street to the Sheikh Rashid Road intersection for traffic heading towards Bur Dubai.
The second tunnel will serve vehicles traveling from Dubai-Al Ain Road to Al Wasl Club Street. RTA will also open a bridge for left-turn traffic from Al Asayel Street to Oud Metha Street.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, remarked that the project is part of the Sheikh Rashid Corridor Development Project and is intended to support urban development and population growth in Dubai.
The project includes improvements to four major intersections, the construction of bridges and two tunnels with a combined length of 4.3 kilometers, and upgrades to 14 kilometers of roads.
According to RTA, the project serves Zabeel, Al Jaddaf, Oud Metha, Umm Hurair, Latifa Hospital, and Al Wasl Club. The population in these areas is expected to exceed 420,000 by 2030.
Upon completion, the capacity of Oud Metha Street will increase from 10,400 vehicles per hour to 15,600 vehicles per hour in both directions. Average travel time along the corridor is expected to be reduced from 20 minutes to five minutes.
Earlier this year, RTA opened two bridges under the project. One bridge serves traffic from Al Asayel Street to Al Wasl Club Street with a capacity of 2,400 vehicles per hour. The second connects Al Asayel Street to Al Khail Road towards Business Bay Crossing and has a capacity of 3,000 vehicles per hour.
The project also includes widening existing roads, adding turning lanes, constructing service roads, and expanding bridge capacity at key intersections to improve traffic movement across the corridor.
